Western Kentucky is the only place in America where barbecue means mutton, a habit inherited from Welsh settlers and Catholic parish picnics, and US 60 is its main street: Owensboro's smoke temples, Bill Monroe's bluegrass homeland, the riverbank where Audubon kept store and drew birds, a world-class fluorite museum in tiny Marion, and Paducah, the quilt capital, at the confluence. The Lincolns crossed the Ohio at Cloverport heading for Indiana, by tradition, and so does the story.

• Metropolis Superman — Across the river in Illinois, a 15-foot Superman guards the courthouse of the official Hometown of Superman. Worth the bridge.
