America's longest slow road, southern half
Blue Ridge Parkway & the Smokies is a ~400-mile back-roads route from Roanoke to Cherokee (+ Smokies spurs) on Blue Ridge Pkwy, US 441 and US 129, driven in 3–5 days, that stays off I-81 / I-40 / I-26 through the Upper South.
The Natchez Trace's mountain cousin: 45 mph, no trucks, no billboards, mileposts counting Roanoke (120) to Cherokee (469). Highest peaks in the East, an abandoned Wizard of Oz theme park, gem-mine kitsch, Asheville's gilded mansion — then over the Smokies on Newfound Gap Road, with a spur to the most famous 11 miles of curves in America. The parkway is the destination; the towns are the intermissions.

US 441 crosses the Smokies' spine at 5,046 ft (FDR dedicated the park here, straddling the state line). The spur road climbs to Kuwohi — long mapped as Clingmans Dome, renamed in 2024 — 6,643 ft, observation spiral above the clouds.
The kitsch capital of the Appalachians: Ripley's everything, the Space Needle, airbrush tees, and — genuinely great — the Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum's 20,000 sets. Dolly's Dollywood is twenty minutes on.
318 curves in 11 miles of US 129 — the most famous driving road in America. The Tree of Shame at the resort collects parts from bikes that didn't make it. Pair with the empty, serene Cherohala Skyway if curves beat crowds.
