The Pocahontas and Williamson coalfields made more millionaires per square mile than anywhere in America and paid the men underground in scrip. US 52 runs the ledger: Bramwell's baron mansions, the courthouse steps in Welch where Sid Hatfield was gunned down in 1921, the Kimball memorial regarded as the country's first to Black WWI veterans, and Matewan, whose 1920 shootout lit the largest labor uprising in American history at Blair Mountain.

Bramwell's baron houses and the winding Pocahontas seam country into McDowell's county seat.

  The town of coal barons, once claiming more millionaires per capita than anywhere in America; the mansions still line the Bluestone bend.

• 🏛️Welch — Welch

  On these courthouse steps in 1921, Baldwin-Felts agents shot Matewan's police chief Sid Hatfield dead, the murder that sent 10,000 miners marching on Blair Mountain.

  A sandstone fin standing over US 52 with a short trail to the top; the coalfield's one purely scenic indulgence.

  Regarded as the first memorial in the country to Black WWI veterans, raised in 1928 by a coalfield county that sent thousands; restored and still gathering.

The floodwall town of the 1920 shootout, then the coal-built county seat on the Tug.

  The 1920 shootout between miners and mine guards played out on this street; the museum tells the union war the textbooks skipped. Sayles' film got it right here.

  An office building constructed of 65 tons of local coal in 1933, polished black and proud of it.

• Devil Anse Hatfield statue — A life-size Italian marble of the patriarch over his grave at Sarah Ann, ordered by the family and somehow exactly right.
