Two of the New Deal's greatest public works meet at Rockfish Gap: Skyline Drive's 105 miles through Shenandoah, then the Blue Ridge Parkway's first Virginia act down to Roanoke. It is a road built purely to be driven slowly: 75 overlooks in the park alone, a presidential fishing camp hidden below Big Meadows, and the Peaks of Otter waiting with a lodge, a lake, and a sunrise Jefferson is said to have admired.

Skyline Drive

Front Royal → Rockfish Gap · ~105 mi

Shenandoah's full length: Skyland, Big Meadows, and the hollows' stone walls fading back into forest.

• 🛏️Skyland — Shenandoah NP

  A 1890s mountain resort that predates its own national park, at the Drive's highest point; Massanutten fills the western window.

• 🏞️Big Meadows — Shenandoah NP

  The park's great open anomaly: a high meadow of deer and berry thickets, with the Byrd visitor center telling the CCC and displacement stories straight.

• 🏛️Rapidan Camp — Shenandoah NP

  Herbert Hoover's trout-stream White House, three cabins deep in the hollow; ranger tours run from Big Meadows in season.

Parkway North

Rockfish Gap → Peaks of Otter · ~85 mi

Humpback Rocks' farmstead, the James River crossing, and the climb to the Peaks.

• 🌿Humpback Rocks — Blue Ridge Pkwy

  An 1890s farmstead at the parkway's start and a short, steep scramble to the rocks; the classic first-milepost hike.

• 🛏️Peaks of Otter — Bedford

  Lodge, lake and Sharp Top's cone; a summit shuttle spares the knees, and the view has been drawing pilgrims since the founders' era.

Into Roanoke

Peaks of Otter → Roanoke · ~35 mi

Down off the ridge to the star on Mill Mountain and the valley's rail city.

• 🛸Mill Mountain Star — Roanoke

  An 88-foot neon star burning over the city since 1949, the biggest of its kind; the overlook throws in the whole valley.

Worth a detour

• Natural Bridge State Park — The 215-foot limestone arch Jefferson bought from George III's crown; the survey-party lore includes a young Washington's initials.
• Blue Ridge Tunnel — Claudius Crozet's 1858 railroad tunnel under Rockfish Gap, reopened as a mile-long walk through the mountain. Bring a light.
