Three hundred thousand people walked or rode through the Cumberland Gap before 1810, and the Wilderness Road was how: Boone's trace from the Holston settlements through the great notch and up into the Bluegrass. This drive runs it west and north: a railroad still threading a natural tunnel, a rebuilt 1775 frontier fort, the Gap's tri-state pinnacle, a town built in a meteor crater, and, in the fullest historical irony available, the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken at Corbin.

Powell Valley

Bristol → Martin's Station · ~90 mi

US 58 under the long wall of Cumberland Mountain, through Natural Tunnel to the rebuilt fort.

• 🌲Natural Tunnel — Duffield

  An 850-foot natural bore that a railroad has run through since 1890; a chairlift drops you to the floor. Long billed as an eighth wonder, with some justice.

• 🏛️Martin's Station — Ewing

  A working reconstruction of the 1775 frontier fort on the road's last stretch before the Gap; the living history is unusually unsentimental.

The Gap

Martin's Station → Middlesboro · ~20 mi

The Pinnacle's tri-state view, the restored trace, and the crater town on the far side.

  The notch that opened the West, with Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky at your feet; the restored trace below walks like 1780.

Boone's Trace North

Up 25E through Pineville and Corbin, then the old road's end at the crafts capital.

• 🍽️Sanders Café — Corbin

  The Colonel's original 1940 café and motel, restored with museum cases and a working franchise; the eleven herbs began as road food right here.

• 🏛️Levi Jackson Park — London

  The Wilderness Road's McNitt's Defeat site, where a 1786 emigrant camp was overrun; the Mountain Life Museum keeps the settlers' side.

• 🏘️Berea — Berea

  Kentucky's crafts capital around a college founded in 1855 as the South's first interracial and coed college, where every student still works instead of paying tuition.

Worth a detour

• Hensley Settlement — A restored early-1900s mountaintop settlement on Brush Mountain, reached by park shuttle; self-sufficiency preserved in amber.
• Chained Rock — Pineville chained a boulder to the mountain above town in 1933, mostly as a bit; the chain and the view both hold.
