the Gulf's other coast road, Ybor City to the Everglades' door
US 41: The Tamiami Trail North, Tampa to Naples is a ~250-mile back-roads route from Tampa to Naples on US 41, FL 776, Gasparilla Road and Sanibel Causeway, driven in 2–3 days, that stays off I-75 through the Florida Peninsula.
The interstate runs twenty miles inland; US 41 runs the shore it was built to open in 1928. Ybor City's cigar factories and Cuban sandwiches, the fishing-village side of Tampa Bay, Sarasota's circus-money museums, Venice's shark-tooth beach, the causeway to Boca Grande's tarpon pass, Edison's winter laboratory at Fort Myers, the shelling flats of Sanibel, a hollow-earth utopia at Estero and the Naples pier: the Gulf coast between the condos, at the speed it was sold to the first tourists.
📍 Mid-century Florida at its most intact: the Trail's original motels, neon and Mediterranean Revival civic buildings survive here better than anywhere east of Miami.
Cigar city first, Ybor's brick factories and the Columbia's 1905 dining rooms, then US 41 down the fishing-village side of the bay to the Manatee River.
Vicente Martinez-Ybor's 1886 company town made Tampa the cigar capital of the world; the Columbia (1905) is Florida's oldest restaurant, the Cuban sandwich was perfected on 7th Avenue, and the chickens are protected by ordinance.
The sideshow performers' winter town, where the Giant and the Half-Girl once ran the post office, with zoning that still allows elephants in the yard; the Showmen's Museum in Riverview keeps the record.
TECO's power-plant discharge canal is a state manatee sanctuary; hundreds gather in the warm water November to April, viewable from a free boardwalk.
The Bishop Museum (Snooty the manatee's old home), the De Soto National Memorial where the conquistador landed in 1539, and the Cortez fishing village across the bridge, the last working one on the coast.
Sarasota was John Ringling's project, and his bayfront museum, Venetian mansion and circus galleries are the proof; Siesta Key's quartz sand and Venice's fossil beach are the beaches.
The circus king's 1920s estate: his Rubens-heavy art museum, the Cà d'Zan Venetian palace on the bay, and the Circus Museum with the Howard Bros. miniature; the state university runs it now.
99 percent quartz sand that stays cool at noon, routinely ranked the country's best beach; the Sunday drum circle at sunset is the local religion.
The 'Shark Tooth Capital of the World': the Gulf serves up fossil teeth from a Miocene bed offshore, sift at the waterline; downtown is John Nolen's 1920s plan with its Mediterranean Revival intact.
FL 776 through Englewood's beach-town main street to Placida, the toll causeway to Boca Grande, tarpon capital, railroad resort, no stoplights, and back across the Myakka to Charlotte Harbor.
The 1911 railroad's island resort, still without a traffic light: the 1890 lighthouse, the Gasparilla Inn, and Boca Grande Pass, where the world's tarpon tournament has run since the 1930s (May–June).
The beach town's one-block downtown and Lemon Bay's mangrove edges; Stump Pass for the shells.
Rebuilt twice by hurricanes (2004, 2022) and still a 1920s harbor town at heart; the Peace River Wildlife Center and the Fishermen's Village boardwalk.
US 41 across the Caloosahatchee to Fort Myers' winter estates, the causeway to Sanibel's shell flats and lighthouse, the Koreshan utopia's ruins at Estero, and the Trail's last straight run to the Naples pier.
Edison's 1886 riverfront laboratory and the botanical garden he planted to find rubber, next door to Henry Ford's house; the banyan he planted in 1927 covers an acre.
The 'Sanibel Stoop' on a shelling coast with no high-rises by law; the 'Ding' Darling refuge's wildlife drive and the 1884 lighthouse, all rebuilt after Ian in 2022.
An 1894 utopian colony that believed the Earth was hollow and we lived inside it; eleven buildings of the 'New Jerusalem' survive on the Estero River.
The 1888 pier, rebuilt again after Ian, and the old Naples the railroad built; the Tamiami Trail turns east here for the Everglades.
