South of St. Augustine, A1A runs the barrier islands Henry Flagler's railroad opened: quiet dune country, then the hard-packed sand where American speed was born. Ormond and Daytona hosted beach racing from 1903 until the sand outgrew the cars and became the Speedway; you can still drive the beach itself. Past the tallest lighthouse in Florida, the road dead-ends into the wild half of Cape Canaveral. Chains straight off the Golden Isles route at St. Augustine.

The Quiet Stretch

St. Augustine → Flagler Beach · ~35 mi

Crescent Beach, Fort Matanzas by free ferry, Marineland, and miles of undeveloped dune where A1A rides right on the water.

• 🏛️Fort Matanzas — Crescent Beach

  A 1742 coquina watchtower guarding St. Augustine's back door, reached by a free NPS ferry. 'Matanzas' means slaughters; the Spanish executed shipwrecked French Huguenots here in 1565.

• 🛸Marineland — Marineland

  The world's first oceanarium (1938), built as an underwater movie studio. It was Florida's biggest attraction before Disney; the dolphin habitat still runs in the deco shell.

The Ormond Loop under the oaks, then Daytona: beach driving, streamline-era motels, and the lighthouse at the inlet.

• 🌿The Ormond Loop — Ormond Beach

  A 30-mile ride on Old Dixie Highway under an oak canopy the developers never got. The best surviving stretch of the original 1910s tourist road in Florida.

• 🎬Birthplace of Speed Park — Ormond Beach

  Olds and Winton raced the hard sand here in 1903; land-speed records fell on this beach for three decades before Bonneville took over. A replica Ormond Garage tells it.

• 🛸Drive the Beach — Daytona Beach

  Daytona still lets you drive on the sand that made it famous, 10 mph, tide permitting. The Streamline Hotel on A1A is where NASCAR was founded in 1947, over drinks on the roof.

• 🏛️Ponce Inlet Lighthouse — Ponce Inlet

  Florida's tallest lighthouse, 175 feet of 1887 brick, all 203 steps climbable. The Fresnel lens exhibit is one of the best anywhere.

Mosquito Lagoon

Ponce Inlet → Titusville · ~60 mi

New Smyrna's surf town, then the empty run down Canaveral National Seashore's back side to the Space Coast.

  24 miles of undeveloped Atlantic beach saved by the Space Center next door. Apollo Beach at the north end; rocket views with pelicans instead of crowds.

Worth a detour

• Bulow Plantation Ruins — Coquina sugar-mill ruins in the hammock, burned in the Second Seminole War in 1836 and left where they fell.
• Turtle Mound — A 35-foot shell midden south of New Smyrna, built over centuries by the Timucua. Sailors used it as a landmark; you climb it on a boardwalk.
