Finished in 1928 after 13 years of dynamite, dredges and dead mules, the Tamiami Trail crosses the Everglades at eye level with the sawgrass. Alligator Alley does it behind a fence at 70; US 41 does it with gators sunning on the canal bank, the smallest post office in America, a Skunk Ape research headquarters, Miccosukee villages, and the stone-crab capital hanging off a spur. It lands in Miami as Calle Ocho, which is its own reward.
