The Forgotten Coast's logical sequel: pick up at Perry where that route lets off and run the Big Bend south, the longest undeveloped coastline in the lower 48's warm water. Scallop towns, an island that once out-shipped Tampa, wintering manatees you can legally swim with, a monkey island, live mermaids since 1947, and the Greek sponge-diving capital of America at the end. Nothing here needed a theme park; the springs were the theme.

The drive, segment by segment

The Big Bend

Perry → Chiefland · ~75 mi

Pine flats and fishing villages: Steinhatchee's scallop fleet, Cross City, and the Suwannee crossing at Fanning Springs.

• 🍽️Steinhatchee — Steinhatchee

  A river-mouth fishing village that triples in summer scallop season, when anyone with a mask and a bag can snorkel up dinner. Roy's has fed the fleet for generations.

The Manatee Coast

Chiefland → Homosassa · ~70 mi

The Cedar Key spur out to the island, then Crystal River, where the springs hold the largest manatee gatherings anywhere.

  Once Florida's biggest Gulf port and the cedar source for Eberhard Faber's pencils; the 1896 hurricane and the railroad's death left an island of clam farmers and artists. Florida's best time capsule.

• 🌿Three Sisters Springs — Crystal River

  The only place in America where you can legally swim with manatees. On cold January mornings hundreds pack the spring like gentle boulders.

Mermaids to Sponges

Homosassa → Tarpon Springs · ~85 mi

Weeki Wachee's underwater theater, then down US 19 to the sponge docks, baklava and the blessing of the fleet.

• 🛸Monkey Island — Homosassa

  A tiny river island with its own lighthouse and a troop of spider monkeys, resident since the 1960s when a fed-up developer marooned the escape artists there.

• 🎬Weeki Wachee Springs — Weeki Wachee

  Live mermaid shows in a submerged theater since 1947, performed 20 feet down in a first-magnitude spring. Elvis visited; the mermaids remain undefeated roadside royalty.

• 🍽️Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks — Tarpon Springs

  Greek divers built the sponge capital of the world here after 1905, and the town still has the highest share of Greek Americans in the country. Sponge boats, Epiphany cross dives, and serious baklava.

Worth a detour

• Manatee Springs State Park — A first-magnitude spring pouring 100 million gallons a day into the Suwannee. Manatees idle in the run all winter; a boardwalk hangs over the whole show.
• Yankeetown — Elvis filmed Follow That Dream here in 1961, and the town renamed the highway for it. Old-mullet Florida, unbothered since.
