US 441 down the spine of Georgia
Sherman to the Swamp is a ~330-mile back-roads route from Dillard to Folkston on US 441 and GA 15, driven in 3–4 days, that stays off I-75 / I-16 / I-95 through the Deep South.
Georgia top to bottom without touching an interstate: waterfall gorges and Foxfire country, Athens's college-rock holy sites, the official Antebellum Trail through towns Sherman spared (or didn't), Flannery O'Connor's peacocks, the swamp Pogo called home — and a platform built for watching freight trains. US 441 runs from the Smokies to the Okefenokee like a core sample of the South.
📍 Georgia historical markers the whole way; Athens–Macon is the state's official Antebellum Trail.
Down from the Smokies handoff: Tallulah's 1,000-foot gorge, Foxfire's folkways, goats on a roof, a giant red apple — then Athens, where American college rock was invented in a converted church.
Nearly 1,000 feet deep; Karl Wallenda crossed it on a wire in 1970 (the towers' footings remain). Deliverance (1972) was shot in this corner of Georgia — cue the banjos, respectfully.

Flannery O'Connor's dairy farm, peafowl restored and screaming on schedule. Her grave is in Memory Hill; the vast, somber ruins of Central State Hospital — once the largest asylum in the world — loom at the town's edge.
The Allman Brothers' 1970–73 communal home, now their museum. Rose Hill Cemetery holds Duane and Berry side by side — and the headstone that named 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.' H&H Restaurant still serves the soul food Mama Louise fed the broke band. Ocmulgee Mounds' earth lodge floor is 1,000 years old and original.
Dublin (where a 15-year-old M.L. King first spoke in public), a styrofoam Statue of Liberty, the long wiregrass miles, and the Okefenokee's blackwater under certified dark skies — exit via the train-watching Funnel.
First African Baptist Church, 1944: a 15-year-old Martin Luther King Jr. won an oratory contest with 'The Negro and the Constitution' — his first public address. The block is now a small plaza in his honor.
The Lions Club's 1/12-scale Statue of Liberty (1986): head carved from a cypress stump, torch of styrofoam, spirit of pure civic gumption.
