US 11 runs from Canada to New Orleans, and this is its Deep South act: down the last valley of the Appalachians while the interstate hums fifty yards away, ignored. Fort Payne made the country's socks and the band Alabama, Birmingham made iron, Eutaw kept its antebellum square, and Meridian raised the Father of Country Music. Interstate exits sell gas; US 11 sells the whole century the interstate skipped.
