US 61 through the Mississippi Delta
The Blues Highway is a ~320-mile back-roads route from Memphis to Natchez on US 61, US 82 and MS 1, driven in 2–4 days, that stays off I-55 through the Deep South.
The most storied road in American music: flat as a griddle, straight as a guitar string, haunted at every crossroads. Memphis to Natchez through the Delta — 'the most Southern place on Earth' — past juke joints, Robert Johnson's graves (all three), Emmett Till's Mississippi, tamale counters and the ruins of empires both cotton and Corinthian. Bob Dylan named an album after it for a reason.
📍 The Mississippi Blues Trail's 200+ interpretive markers are the best treasure hunt in the South, and this corridor holds the densest run of them.
Beale Street, Sun and Stax send you off; the casino flats of Tunica (stop at the Gateway to the Blues museum in the old depot) give way to the real thing at Clarksdale, where 61 meets 49 under the crossroads guitars.
The trinity in one city: W.C. Handy's Beale, the Sun Studio where Elvis walked in, and Stax's Soulsville. Add Graceland in proportion to your devotion.
Built into the Lorraine Motel, preserving Room 306 and the balcony where Dr. King was killed on April 4, 1968. Start the whole trip here; everything south of Memphis echoes it.

Dockery Farms — 'where the blues was born' — Po' Monkey's silent juke, the Grammy Museum in Cleveland, Kermit the Frog's home creek in Leland, and the US 82 spur to B.B. King's Indianola and Robert Johnson's Greenwood.
Where 61 meets 49 — Robert Johnson's alleged bargain. Delta Blues Museum (with Muddy Waters's cabin), Ground Zero, Red's juke joint, the Riverside Hotel where Bessie Smith died (1937), beds at the Shack Up Inn, and Abe's Bar-B-Q since 1924.
Willie Seaberry's sharecropper-shack juke ran Thursday nights from 1963 until his death in 2016. Closed now, still standing in the fields — road-trippers stop to pay respects. McCarty Pottery in town shapes Delta clay into heirlooms.
'You might say it all started right here' — B.B. King, about the plantation where Charley Patton taught a generation. The Grammy Museum Mississippi in Cleveland is the modern bookend.
Jim Henson grew up playing along Deer Creek, and Leland keeps a small, sincere museum to Kermit's swampy origins. The Highway 61 Blues Museum shares the block.
World-class museum wrapped around the brick gin where B.B. worked; he's buried on the grounds. Club Ebony, the chitlin'-circuit landmark he later bought, stands nearby.
Three churchyards claim him; Little Zion's pecan-shaded plot north of town is the best-attested. Whiskey and guitar picks accumulate. The Help was filmed all over Greenwood; Tallahatchie Flats rents shotgun shacks on the river.
The collapsing store where a lie about 14-year-old Emmett Till began (1955). Markers here have been defaced and replaced for decades — the river-site sign is now bulletproof. Unbearable and necessary.
The restored 1955 courthouse where the murderers were acquitted in 67 minutes, and where the county issued its formal apology in 2007. The center's guided story is the strongest hour in the Delta.
Tamales in Greenville, Muddy Waters's Rolling Fork, the store where the teddy bear was born, and the long levee miles down to Vicksburg's bluffs.
Tamales and gigantic porterhouses out of a 1941 grocery storefront — enter through the kitchen. Greenville is the hub of the Delta's Hot Tamale Trail (ask about the festival each October).
McKinley Morganfield was born here in 1913 (and raised up at Stovall, near Clarksdale). The square keeps his marker and a guitar-shaped gazebo; the town rebuilt it all after the 2023 tornado.
Near here in 1902, Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a captive bear — the cartoon that followed birthed the 'teddy bear.' The 1913 store still stands (hours vary; the marker never closes).
The most haunting stretch: Margaret's folk-art Grocery, Port Gibson ('too beautiful to burn'), the Windsor columns standing alone in the woods, and Natchez — grandest and most complicated of river towns.
Rev. H.D. Dennis promised Margaret a castle and built one from cinderblock, paint and scripture — 'ALL IS WELCOME, JEWS AND GENTILES.' Viewable from the road while preservationists work.
'Too beautiful to burn,' Grant supposedly said while marching through. The golden hand atop First Presbyterian has pointed heavenward since 1859.
Twenty-three Corinthian columns alone in the woods — all that's left of Mississippi's grandest mansion, which survived the war only to burn from a party guest's cigarette in 1890.
More antebellum mansions than anywhere (the millionaires sat out the war); Longwood's unfinished octagon — workers dropped tools in 1861 and never came back. Hold both: the Forks of the Road slave-market memorial, and a beer at Under-the-Hill where the river men drank.
