Cane River & El Camino Real is a ~180-mile back-roads route from Natchez to Toledo Bend on US 84, LA 6 and LA 119, driven in 2 days, that stays off I-49 through the Gulf Coast.
Spain's royal road to Texas crossed Louisiana here, and the towns it left behind are the state's oldest. This run crosses the Delta from Natchez through Ferriday, where one small town produced Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart as first cousins, into Huey Long's hometown, then Natchitoches, the oldest permanent settlement in the whole Louisiana Purchase, and out the Camino past frontier forts to the Sabine.
