Jones County's small farmers saw little reason to die for planters' cotton, and Newton Knight's band spent the war's last years fighting the Confederacy from the Leaf River swamps. This route runs their piney-woods country west along US 84: Laurel's lumber-money art museum and HGTV-famous streets, the Knight country around Ellisville, and on through Brookhaven to Natchez, where the route ties the atlas's threads together at the bluff.

Red Bluff — Mississippi's Grand Canyon, a livid red gorge steadily eating Highway 587 near Foxworth. The edges are genuinely unstable; admire from the firm side.
Sullivan's Hollow — The hollow whose feuding Sullivans earned a statewide reputation for meanness; the legends outgrew the map, which is the point.
