The Old Federal Road is a ~230-mile back-roads route from Columbus, GA to Fort Mims on US 80, US 31 and AL 21, driven in 2–3 days, that stays off I-85 / I-65 through the Deep South.
Cut through the Creek Nation as a postal horse path in 1806, the Federal Road became the settlers' pipeline into Alabama and one of the fuses of the Creek War. This tracing runs Fort Mitchell to Fort Mims: past Tuskegee's twin landmarks of the Airmen and the Institute, the French fort where Weatherford surrendered to Jackson, the Burnt Corn crossroads where the war's first shots fired, and the stockade whose 1813 massacre changed the map.
