Old US 90 and the back levees of Acadiana
Bayou Teche & the Cajun Prairie is a ~230-mile back-roads route from New Orleans to Eunice on US 90, LA 182 and LA 31, driven in 2–3 days, that stays off I-10 & the Basin bridge through the Gulf Coast.
West of New Orleans the interstate flies over the swamp on stilts; this route stays down in it. Sugar towns along Bayou Lafourche, the oak-arched Teche country, Tabasco's salt-dome island — then up onto the Cajun prairie, where the week is built around Saturday: accordion jam at sunrise, beers at Fred's by nine, live radio from the Liberty at six. Laissez les bons temps rouler, slowly.

Catfish-shack country down the 'longest Main Street in the world' (Bayou Lafourche), sugar history at Laurel Valley, swamp tours out of Houma, and Morgan City — where Tarzan was first filmed and shrimp shares a festival with petroleum.
'Catfish Capital of the Universe' by act of the Louisiana legislature. Spuddy's or a roadside shack — wild-caught, thin-fried.
The largest surviving 19th-century sugar plantation complex in the country — rows of weathered cypress quarters along the cane. Thibodaux also carries the memory of the 1887 massacre of striking Black cane workers; the general store museum is the keeper of all of it.
Family outfits run flat-boats into the Terrebonne wetlands — gators, Spanish moss, and guides whose accents are the real attraction.
The first Tarzan film (1917) was shot in these swamps. Tour 'Mr. Charlie,' the first transportable offshore rig, then note the festival name: Shrimp & Petroleum, since 1936. Only here.
LA 182 follows Bayou Teche under the oaks: Franklin's antebellum main street, hot French bread in Jeanerette, Tabasco's island, Evangeline's oak, and the crawfish capital of the world.
Six blocks of oak canopy, iron lampposts and 400-odd historic buildings — the sugar boom frozen mid-stride.
French bread from the same recipe since 1884. When the red light by the door is lit, hot bread is coming out — pull over immediately.
Tabasco has aged on this salt dome since 1868. Jungle Gardens shelters a snowy-egret city and a centuries-old Buddha in a glass pagoda — the McIlhennys were eccentric in the best way.
Shadows-on-the-Teche (1834) under the oaks, and the streets of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels — have a po'boy at Victor's and watch for fictional detectives.
Where Longfellow's exiled Acadian lovers were said to part. The Acadian Memorial next door names the real deportees of the Grand Dérangement — the sadness under all the romance.
Up out of the swamp into zydeco country — Lafayette's dance halls, Grand Coteau's oaks, Opelousas (zydeco's capital), and Eunice's Saturday-night live radio show. Time everything around the weekend.
Crawfish Capital of the World (legislature again, 1959). The Saturday zydeco breakfast tradition lives at Buck & Johnny's — dancing before 10 a.m. is not optional.
A living Acadian-Creole village with Sunday jams, the Blue Moon Saloon's porch dancehall — and Borden's (1940), the last old-line Borden's ice cream parlor anywhere.
Marc Savoy's accordion workshop hosts a Saturday-morning Cajun jam among the instruments. Bring boudin to share, sit quietly, witness.
'Rendez-vous des Cajuns' — the Cajun Grand Ole Opry — broadcasts live most Saturday nights from this 1924 movie palace. Two-stepping in the aisles encouraged.
Open Saturday mornings only, since 1962: live Cajun French radio from a bar the size of a living room, dancers spinning by 9 a.m. Tante Sue's rules are posted; obey them.
