The musical genome of America in three weeks: honky-tonks, Delta jukes, zydeco Saturdays, Muscle Shoals, Hank's highway, Elvis's two houses, bourbon ballads and the Bristol big bang — looping home to Nashville. Leave on a Friday so day 9 is Fred's Saturday; day 21 tells you the truth about the Fold.

This trip chains: Highway 64: Shiloh to Lookout Mountain · The Blues Highway · Bayou Teche & the Cajun Prairie · US 90: The Creole Coast · Hank's Lost Highway · The Civil Rights Trail · Natchez Trace Parkway · The Hill Country Ramble · Bourbon, Bluegrass & Shakers · The Crooked Road

Day by day

Day 5: The Delta

River Road connector; Preservation Hall set at night.

Frenchmen Street curriculum. Rest day, technically.

Day 9: Cajun Saturday

Fred's at 9, Savoy at 10, Liberty at 6 — the holy Saturday, done right.

Day 14: → The Shoals

FAME and 3614 Jackson Highway: where the Swampers swamped.

Day 15: → Tupelo (via Trace)

Day 16: Hill Country → Oxford

Holly Springs, Foxfire Ranch if Sunday, Rowan Oak and Square Books.

Day 17: Trace north → Nashville

Meriwether Lewis, Leiper's Fork open mic luck, Loveless biscuits at MP 444.

Day 18: → Bourbon country

US 31E/150 north: Lincoln's temple, Maker's dip, Bardstown's bullet holes.

Day 19: Bluegrass → Lexington

Shaker Village quiet, Keeneland dawn if timed — bluegrass in both senses.

Day 20: → Bristol

The long Cumberland diagonal to the 1927 big bang; Burger Bar pilgrimage.

Day 21: The Fold → Nashville

Truth in scheduling: the Fold plays Saturdays only, and with day 9 at Fred's this lands a Thursday. Stretch two extra mountain nights (Abingdon and Damascus absorb them beautifully) to make it a Fold Saturday — or roll home via Knoxville's lunchtime Blue Plate Special and a Lower Broadway nightcap. You've earned the cliché either way.
