US 301: The Ghost Road is a ~290-mile back-roads route from Emporia to Santee on US 301, driven in 2–3 days, that stays off I-95 (that's the point) through the Atlantic Coast.
Before I-95, US 301 was the New York-to-Florida main line, and its Carolinas run is now a 290-mile museum of the great American road trip: neon motel skeletons, the first official call for independence at Halifax, a park of thirty giant whirligigs in Wilson, Ava Gardner's shrine at Smithfield, and the 200-foot sombrero of South of the Border, blinking at the state line since 1949. The interstate is always a mile away. Ignore it the whole way down.
