Historyland Highway, the peninsula of presidents
The peninsula between the Potomac and the Rappahannock grew Washington, Monroe, Madison's family, and the Lees, then got politely forgotten, which preserved it. VA 3, the Historyland Highway, runs the whole neck: Washington's birthplace farm, Stratford Hall's great brick H, a signer's ruin stabilized under glass at Menokin, fossil shark teeth on the Potomac cliffs, and Reedville, the menhaden port whose Victorian captains' row once ranked among America's richest streets, by the town's own proud accounting.
