Crowley's Ridge is a 150-mile crescent of windblown loess hills standing alone in the dead-flat Delta, and the only US scenic byway built on a geological accident. Its towns collected an improbable roster: Hemingway wrote in a Piggott barn, Johnny Cash grew up in a New Deal colony at its foot, de Soto likely marched past its mounds, and it dead-ends at Helena, where the Blues Highway waits across the river. Chain the two and you own both banks.

Hemingway's Ridge

Piggott → Jonesboro · ~55 mi

The Pfeiffer house and barn studio, orchard hills that feel airlifted from somewhere else, and the college town at the ridge's waist.

  Pauline Pfeiffer's family home and the barn studio where Hemingway worked on A Farewell to Arms between duck hunts. The most unexpected literary shrine in the Delta.

The Colony Lands

Jonesboro → Forrest City · ~80 mi

The Dyess spur to Cash's boyhood farm, Parkin's mound town, and Village Creek's improbable hardwood forest.

• 🎸Johnny Cash Boyhood Home — Dyess

  A restored farmhouse in the New Deal resettlement colony that raised him; Five Feet High and Rising happened in this yard. The colony's story is told at the old administration building.

• 🏛️Parkin Archeological State Park — Parkin

  A palisaded Mississippian mound town on the St. Francis, widely identified as the Casqui that de Soto's entrada reached in 1541. A first-contact site you can walk.

• 🌲Village Creek State Park — Wynne

  Ridge forest thick with tulip poplar and beech, trees that belong to Appalachia, not Arkansas. The ridge grows its own out-of-place world.

Down to the River

Forrest City → Helena · ~65 mi

Marianna's barbecue pilgrimage, then the ridge's last roll into Helena's blues-soaked riverfront.

  A James Beard America's Classic and one of the oldest Black-owned restaurants in the South: chopped pork on white bread, done when it sells out, usually by late morning.

• 🎸Delta Cultural Center — Helena

  Home of King Biscuit Time, the longest-running daily blues radio show in America, broadcast live at 12:15. Sonny Boy Williamson's ghost keeps office hours on Cherry Street.

Worth a detour

• Chalk Bluff — The ridge's northern tip on the St. Francis, fought over in 1863 and now a quiet battlefield park at the Missouri line.
• St. Francis Sunken Lands — Bottomlands dropped by the 1811-12 New Madrid quakes and never fully drained; a wildlife area built by an earthquake.
