This trip chains: The Buffalo River Loop
Starting in Harrison, this 2-day itinerary connects The Buffalo River Loop. It suits travellers interested in parks, coast, mountains & water; art towns, writers & folkways. The day-by-day bases let you split roughly 120 miles into a sequence of visits rather than trying to cover every linked route end to end. Use the daily highlights to decide which places deserve your longest stops.
Budget an average of about 60 miles per day across the whole trip, or roughly 1.3–2.0 hours behind the wheel at an assumed 30–45 mph back-roads pace. This is a planning estimate, not a measured time for each leg: transfer days can be longer and rest days shorter. Add meal stops, tours, ferries, traffic and hikes separately; use each day's navigation link for current driving estimates.
Use these day-end areas to plan lodging; the map pins are orientation points, not hotel recommendations. The final day can be your departure day.
Choose your dates around the experiences below rather than assuming one season fits the entire trip. These notes come from the linked route guides; check current forecasts and official schedules.
Start at the Buffalo River headquarters on Harrison's courthouse square for the river-level and road reports, then AR 7 south by Mystic Caverns and the Pruitt bridge, with the gravel bar if it is warm. The Arkansas Grand Canyon overlook from the Cliff House deck, pie included, and Jasper's square for lunch at the Ozark Cafe, where the outfitters will tell you whether the upper river is floating. AR 74 west over the Little Buffalo to Ponca, with Steel Creek under Roark Bluff and the low-water bridge before the light goes. Overnight Ponca.
Two show caves under one ticket on AR 7 south of Harrison, the second one found by accident in 1968 and left wild.
The Cliff House Inn's deck above the Big Creek valley, a thousand-foot drop by Ozark standards; the Company's Comin' pie is the toll.
Newton County's seat of 500: the 1940s courthouse square, the Ozark Cafe since 1909, and canoe outfitters for the whole river.
AR 7's bridge over the National River: the Pruitt ranger station, a swimming gravel bar, and the first look at the bluffs.
The put-in for the upper Buffalo's famous float (Ponca to Kyle's Landing, spring only) and Steel Creek's campground under Roark Bluff; the Ponca low-water bridge is where the elk cross.

Boxley at first light for the elk, from the pull-offs and from the car, with the 1870 mill and the Beechwoods church on the way down the valley. Then the six gravel miles up Cave Mountain Road to Hawksbill Crag by mid-morning, before the crowd and only if the road is dry. Lost Valley's 2.3 miles to Eden Falls after lunch, and AR 43 home over the plateau by Compton, where the Hemmed-In Hollow trailhead waits for a longer trip, to Harrison.
The most photographed rock in Arkansas: a sandstone beak over the Whitaker Creek gorge, 1.5 miles from the trailhead on Cave Mountain Road, six gravel miles from Boxley.
A 2.3-mile trail to Eden Falls and a cave with a waterfall inside; the best short hike in the Ozarks.
Trailhead town for Hemmed-In Hollow, the tallest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians at 209 feet, five hard miles down and back.
Two show caves under one ticket on AR 7 south of Harrison, the second one found by accident in 1968 and left wild.
