The whole park and its two famous roads in one long weekend: over Newfound Gap, out to the Cherohala Skyway, back by the Dragon and Cades Cove.

## Why this itinerary works

Starting in Gatlinburg, this 3-day itinerary connects The Dragon & the Skyway. It suits travellers interested in parks, coast, mountains & water; art towns, writers & folkways. The day-by-day bases let you split roughly 280 miles into a sequence of visits rather than trying to cover every linked route end to end. Use the daily highlights to decide which places deserve your longest stops.

## Day by day

### Day 1: Gatlinburg → Bryson City

Up US 441 from Sugarlands to Newfound Gap, and the seven-mile spur to Clingmans Dome if the road is open. Down the Oconaluftee side for Mingus Mill and the Mountain Farm Museum, then the Museum of the Cherokee People in town. Overnight Bryson City.

Highlights to consider:

- **Clingmans Dome** (Clingmans Dome) — A half-mile paved climb to the 1959 observation tower on the highest point in Tennessee; a hundred miles on a clear day, twenty feet in a cloud, and the Fraser firs dying of the adelgid either way. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Newfound Gap** (Newfound Gap) — The state line at 5,046 feet. The Rockefeller Memorial where FDR spoke in 1940; the Appalachian Trail crosses the parking lot. The seven-mile spur to Clingmans Dome (6,643 feet, the park's roof) leaves from here, closed in winter. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Mingus Mill** (Cherokee) — An 1886 turbine mill on Mingus Creek, still grinding on demand; the walk along the millrace is the best five minutes on the road. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Museum of the Cherokee People** (Cherokee) — The Eastern Band's own telling, from the Paleo era through the Removal and the people who stayed in these mountains; Qualla Arts & Crafts across the street is the oldest Native American co-op in the country (1946). [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Oconaluftee & the Mountain Farm Museum** (Cherokee) — A 1900s log farmstead assembled from around the Smokies; elk graze the fields at dawn and dusk since the 2001 reintroduction. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)

### Day 2: Bryson City → Tellico Plains

NC 28 and NC 143 along Fontana Lake through Stecoah to Robbinsville, the Joyce Kilmer figure-eight among the old poplars, then the Cherohala Skyway end to end: Santeetlah Overlook, the mile up Huckleberry Knob, and the Bald River Falls spur on the way down. Fill the tank in Robbinsville. Overnight Tellico Plains.

Highlights to consider:

- **Huckleberry Knob** (Cherohala Skyway) — An easy mile through a grassy bald to the highest point in the Unicoi range, 5,560 feet; a 1950s plane-crash grave sits on the summit. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Santeetlah Overlook** (Cherohala Skyway) — The Skyway's high point at 5,390 feet, the Smokies to the north and the Unicois rolling west. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Bald River Falls** (Tellico Plains) — A 90-foot waterfall you see from the car window on the Tellico River road, six miles off the Skyway; the trail above it follows the river for miles. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Tellico Plains** (Tellico Plains) — The western gateway: the Skyway visitor center, Tellico Grains bakery, and the Charles Hall Museum's two free floors of local history. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Stecoah Valley Center** (Stecoah) — A 1916 rock schoolhouse turned arts center in the valley; the Friday music series runs summer and fall. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)

### Day 3: Tellico Plains → Gatlinburg

North to Vonore and the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, then US 129 along Chilhowee Lake into the Dragon, down and back, with the Fontana Dam spur at the bottom. Home by the Foothills Parkway, the Cades Cove loop while the light lasts, and the Little River Road into Gatlinburg.

Highlights to consider:

- **Tellico Plains** (Tellico Plains) — The western gateway: the Skyway visitor center, Tellico Grains bakery, and the Charles Hall Museum's two free floors of local history. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Sequoyah Birthplace Museum** (Vonore) — The only tribally owned museum in Tennessee, on the site of the Overhill town where Sequoyah was born about 1776; the Fort Loudoun reconstruction (1756) is next door. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Chilhowee Lake** (Calderwood) — Alcoa's string of 1910s–1950s dams turned the Little Tennessee gorge into three skinny lakes; US 129 rides the shore of all of them. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **The Dragon** (Deals Gap) — Eleven miles, 318 curves, no driveways, no intersections: US 129 from Tabcat Creek bridge to the state line. Photographers on the curves sell you your own picture; the Tree of Shame at the Deals Gap store wears the parts of bikes that didn't make it. Drive it like a tourist, not a hero; the sheriff does. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)
- **Fontana Dam** (Fontana) — The tallest dam east of the Rockies, 480 feet, built in 36 months during the war for the aluminum plants; the Appalachian Trail walks across the top. Ten miles east of Deals Gap on NC 28. [The Dragon & the Skyway](https://dixieroadtrip.com/routes/dragon-skyway)

## Practical planning

Budget an average of about 93 miles per day across the whole trip, or roughly 2.1–3.1 hours behind the wheel at an assumed 30–45 mph back-roads pace. This is a planning estimate, not a measured time for each leg: transfer days can be longer and rest days shorter. Add meal stops, tours, ferries, traffic and hikes separately; use each day's navigation link for current driving estimates.
