# The Valley Pike

*US 11 down the Shenandoah*

The Valley Pike is a ~200-mile back-roads route from Winchester to Roanoke on US 11, driven in 2–3 days, that stays off I-81 through the Upper South.

- **Drive:** Winchester → Roanoke
- **Distance:** ~200 mi
- **Days:** 2–3
- **Highways:** US 11
- **Avoids:** I-81
- **Region:** Upper South
- **Themes:** Civil War, Music & Juke Joints, Oddities & Roadside Wonders, Eats & Institutions

I-81 is the East's worst truck gauntlet; US 11 runs beside it through everything the trucks miss. The old Valley Pike was Stonewall Jackson's highway in 1862 and Patsy Cline's hometown main street — limestone churches, battlefield orchards, the world's largest musical instrument (it's a cave), and a fiberglass army of dinosaurs fighting Union soldiers. The Shenandoah, at conversation speed.

Markers: Virginia's silver historical markers — the oldest state program in America (1927) — grow thickest right here.

## The drive, segment by segment

### The Lower Valley

*Winchester → New Market · ~70 mi*

Winchester (which changed hands ~70 times) through Cedar Creek's dawn-attack fields to New Market, where VMI's teenage cadets charged through the mud.

Stops:

- **Patsy Cline's Winchester** (Winchester) · Music & Juke Joints — Her little house on South Kent Street, the drugstore counter she worked, and her grave under the memorial bell tower. Walk the Old Town mall after — apple capital charm intact.
- **Stonewall Jackson's HQ** (Winchester) · Civil War — The 1861–62 winter headquarters museum, launch pad of the Valley Campaign that made his name. The town itself changed hands roughly seventy times — loyalty here was a sunrise-to-sunset proposition.
- **Cedar Creek & Belle Grove** (Middletown) · Civil War — October 19, 1864: surprised at dawn, the Union army was saved by Sheridan's famous ride from Winchester. The 1797 limestone manor at the center hosted Dolley Madison's honeymoon.
- **Route 11 Potato Chips** (Mount Jackson) · Eats & Institutions — Kettle chips fried in glass-walled small batches right on the Pike — the official snack of the anti-interstate movement. Meems Bottom covered bridge crosses the river just south.
- **New Market Battlefield** (New Market) · Civil War — May 15, 1864: 257 VMI cadets — some fifteen years old — charged across the rain-soaked Bushong orchard, losing shoes in the mud and ten classmates to the guns. The 'Field of Lost Shoes' museum holds the roll call.
- **Luray Caverns (spur)** (Luray) · Natural Beauty — Home of the Great Stalacpipe Organ — the world's largest musical instrument, playing actual stalactites across 3.5 acres of cave with rubber mallets, since 1956. Yes it's touristy. It's also a cave that plays hymns.

### The Breadbasket

*New Market → Lexington · ~75 mi*

Mennonite farm country, Staunton's Shakespeare-by-candlelight, a reaper's birthplace — down to Lexington, where Lee and Jackson both rest.

Stops:

- **Staunton** (Staunton) · Small Towns — The Blackfriars Playhouse — the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theater, performed by candlelight chandeliers — plus Woodrow Wilson's birthplace and curb service at Wright's Dairy-Rite since 1952.
- **McCormick Farm** (Raphine) · History & Markers — The blacksmith shop where 22-year-old Cyrus McCormick demonstrated the mechanical reaper in 1831 and quietly changed the world's relationship with dinner. Free, lovely, usually empty.

### Rockbridge & the Star City

*Lexington → Roanoke · ~55 mi*

Natural Bridge (Jefferson bought it from the Crown), dinosaurs vs. Yankees in fiberglass, and Roanoke under its giant star — burgers at the ten-stool Texas Tavern.

Stops:

- **Lexington** (Lexington) · Civil War — Lee's chapel and office at Washington & Lee (Traveller's grave outside collects apples); Jackson's house and grave; VMI's museum displays Little Sorrel, his war horse, taxidermied and unbothered. Hull's Drive-In (1950) survives as a community-owned movie field.
- **Natural Bridge** (Natural Bridge) · Natural Beauty — A 215-foot limestone arch tall enough to swallow the Capitol — surveyed by young George Washington (initials allegedly his), bought by Jefferson from George III's crown patent in 1774. US 11 literally crosses on top of it.
- **Dinosaur Kingdom II** (Natural Bridge) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Mark Cline's fiberglass fever dream: a walk-through tale of Union soldiers attempting to weaponize dinosaurs, going badly. His Foamhenge stood here too before relocating north. National treasure, no notes.
- **Roanoke Star & Texas Tavern** (Roanoke) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — The world's largest freestanding illuminated star (1949, 88.5 ft) blazes over the city from Mill Mountain. Below, the Texas Tavern's ten stools have fed 'a thousand hamburgers' a night since 1930 — order a Cheesy Western.

## Tips and best time to go

- When I-81's trucks thunder past a quarter mile east, you'll understand the whole point of this atlas.
- Apple Blossom Festival (Winchester, early May) books out the valley.
- Pair southbound Pike with northbound Skyline Drive for the full valley portrait.

## Worth a detour

- **Skyline Drive** — The slow parallel: 105 miles at 35 mph along the ridge (entry fee, 75 overlooks). Take it north–south one way and the Pike the other.
- **Burwell-Morgan Mill** — A 1785 grist mill still grinding on weekends, in tiny Millwood east of Winchester.
- **Wade's Mill** — 1750s water-powered flour mill near Raphine — buy grits ground this morning.
