# The Tamiami Trail

*the road they blasted through the Glades*

The Tamiami Trail is a ~110-mile back-roads route from Naples to Miami on US 41, driven in 1–2 days, that stays off I-75 (Alligator Alley) through the Florida Peninsula.

- **Drive:** Naples → Miami
- **Distance:** ~110 mi
- **Days:** 1–2
- **Highways:** US 41
- **Avoids:** I-75 (Alligator Alley)
- **Region:** Florida Peninsula
- **Themes:** Natural Beauty, Oddities & Roadside Wonders, History & Markers, Eats & Institutions

Finished in 1928 after 13 years of dynamite, dredges and dead mules, the Tamiami Trail crosses the Everglades at eye level with the sawgrass. Alligator Alley does it behind a fence at 70; US 41 does it with gators sunning on the canal bank, the smallest post office in America, a Skunk Ape research headquarters, Miccosukee villages, and the stone-crab capital hanging off a spur. It lands in Miami as Calle Ocho, which is its own reward.

Markers: Big Cypress and Everglades NP wayside panels line the Trail; the Collier road-building story is told at the Oasis.

## The drive, segment by segment

### The Mangrove Edge

*Naples → Ochopee · ~35 mi*

Collier-Seminole's royal palms, the FL 29 spur to Everglades City's stone crabs and Chokoloskee's trading post, then the tiny post office.

Stops:

- **Smallwood Store** (Chokoloskee) · History & Markers — A 1906 trading post on stilts at the edge of the Ten Thousand Islands, where the crowd shot the outlaw Ed Watson in 1910. Matthiessen built Killing Mister Watson from this dock.
- **Ochopee Post Office** (Ochopee) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — The smallest post office in the United States, a former irrigation-pipe shed of about 60 square feet. Buy a stamp; the postmark does the bragging.

### Big Cypress

*Ochopee → Shark Valley · ~30 mi*

The national preserve at its swampiest: Clyde Butcher's gallery, the Loop Road detour, and dry-season gator jams along the canal.

Stops:

- **Skunk Ape Research HQ** (Ochopee) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Dave Shealy's lifelong field station for Florida's swamp Bigfoot, attached to a campground and gift shop. The Glades' finest commitment to a bit, or possibly not a bit.
- **Clyde Butcher's Big Cypress Gallery** (Ochopee) · Natural Beauty — Large-format black-and-white photography that did for the Everglades what Adams did for Yosemite. The gallery runs guided swamp walks behind the building.

### Calle Ocho

*Shark Valley → Miami · ~45 mi*

The Miccosukee villages, the airboat strip, and US 41's last act as SW 8th Street: cafecito windows and domino park.

Stops:

- **Shark Valley Tower** (Everglades NP) · National Parks — A 15-mile loop into the sawgrass by tram or bike, ending at a 65-foot spiral tower with the only 360-degree Everglades view there is. Gators use the path as furniture.
- **Miccosukee Indian Village** (Tamiami Trail) · History & Markers — The tribe that never surrendered, living along the Trail since long before it was paved: chickee craftsmanship, airboats, and a museum on their own terms.
- **Ventanitas on Calle Ocho** (Miami) · Eats & Institutions — US 41 ends as SW 8th Street through Little Havana. Order a colada at a walk-up window, watch the domino park, and call the Trail complete.

## Tips and best time to go

- Dry season (Dec–Apr) stacks wildlife along the canals; summer is mosquitoes and afternoon whiteouts.
- Fuel up in Naples or Miami; the middle 70 miles offer gators, not gas.
- Panther crossing zones are enforced and real, especially at dusk.

## Worth a detour

- **Fakahatchee Strand boardwalk** — The ghost-orchid swamp of The Orchid Thief; a 2,000-foot boardwalk into the densest orchid and bromeliad forest on the continent.
- **Robert Is Here** — The Homestead fruit stand institution since 1959: key-lime milkshakes, emus out back, and every tropical fruit you cannot pronounce.

## Spurs & side-roads

- Loop Road (CR 94)
