# Talimena & the Ouachitas

*the South's only east–west mountains*

Talimena & the Ouachitas is a ~130-mile back-roads route from Hot Springs to Talihina, OK on US 270 and AR 88 / OK 1, driven in 1–2 days, that stays off I-30 through the Ozarks, Ouachitas & the Bootheel.

- **Drive:** Hot Springs → Talihina, OK
- **Distance:** ~130 mi
- **Days:** 1–2
- **Highways:** US 270, AR 88 / OK 1
- **Avoids:** I-30
- **Region:** Ozarks, Ouachitas & the Bootheel
- **Themes:** Natural Beauty, Oddities & Roadside Wonders, Cult Classics & Pop Lore, Campgrounds

The Ouachitas run east to west, almost alone among American ranges, and the Talimena National Scenic Byway rides their crest for 54 miles of switchbacks and long blue views. The approach is its own show: the quartz-crystal capital of the world, the radio hometown of Lum and Abner, and a castle-in-the-sky lodge named for a Dutch queen. The byway tips a few miles over the Oklahoma line, which the atlas forgives.

Markers: Byway waysides crown nearly every overlook; Mount Ida's mines post their own dig rules.

## The drive, segment by segment

### Quartz Country

*Hot Springs → Mena · ~80 mi*

US 270 through the Ouachita National Forest, dig-your-own crystal mines at Mount Ida, and the railroad town of Mena at the mountain's foot.

Stops:

- **Mount Ida crystal digs** (Mount Ida) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — The self-crowned Quartz Crystal Capital of the World: pay-to-dig mines where a few hours with a hand rake sends you home with the real thing.
- **Janssen Park** (Mena) · Small Towns — Mena's square-block park around an 1851 log cabin and spring, in a town the Kansas City Southern railroad conjured in 1896.

### The Skyline

*Mena → Talihina · ~50 mi*

Up to Queen Wilhelmina's lodge, then the full crest run along Rich and Winding Stair mountains to the Oklahoma end.

Stops:

- **Queen Wilhelmina State Park** (Rich Mountain) · State Parks — The 'castle in the sky' lodge atop Arkansas's second-highest peak, named for the Dutch queen whose investors financed the railroad below. Sunrise from the lodge porch is the fee.
- **Talimena crest overlooks** (Winding Stair Mtn) · Natural Beauty — Fifty-four miles of ridgeline byway with pull-offs stacked like theater boxes over the forested folds. Late October turns the whole run to copper.
- **Talihina** (Talihina, OK) · Small Towns — The byway's western gate in Choctaw Nation country, a two-street railroad town that fills with motorcycles every fall weekend.

## Tips and best time to go

- Fuel in Mena or Talihina; the skyline offers overlooks, not gas pumps.
- The crest fogs in fast; if Mena is socked in, wait it out with pie rather than drive it blind.

## Worth a detour

- **Lum & Abner Museum** — The actual Jot 'Em Down Store at Pine Ridge, headquarters of the 1930s radio duo who put fictionalized Ouachita life on national airwaves.
- **Heavener Runestone** — An Oklahoma hillside slab carved with runes of hotly debated origin: Norse explorers or bored settlers. The park enjoys the argument either way.
