# The Forgotten Coast

*US 98 & Scenic 30A to the Big Bend*

The Forgotten Coast is a ~280-mile back-roads route from Pensacola to St. Marks on US 98 and CR 30A, driven in 2–3 days, that stays off I-10 through the Gulf Coast.

- **Drive:** Pensacola → St. Marks
- **Distance:** ~280 mi
- **Days:** 2–3
- **Highways:** US 98, CR 30A
- **Avoids:** I-10
- **Region:** Gulf Coast
- **Themes:** Natural Beauty, Eats & Institutions, Oddities & Roadside Wonders, Cult Classics & Pop Lore

Florida before Florida happened to it. Past the white-sand resort strip waits the state's quietest shore: rare coastal dune lakes, an oyster town rebuilding itself, a phone-booth police station, a swamp spring where Hollywood filmed its monsters, and a lighthouse where monarch butterflies mass each fall. The Panhandle's nickname for this stretch is official — and accurate.

Markers: Florida heritage markers run thick from Port St. Joe (the 1838 Constitution convention) eastward.

## The drive, segment by segment

### Emerald Coast & 30A

*Pensacola → Rosemary Beach · ~90 mi*

Through Gulf Breeze (ask about the UFOs), past Fort Walton's ancient temple mound, then off the four-lane onto 30A: dune lakes, design-school beach towns, and the set of The Truman Show.

Stops:

- **Gulf Breeze UFO Country** (Gulf Breeze) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Site of the late-1980s 'Gulf Breeze sightings,' one of the most famous UFO flaps in American history — likely a hoax involving a model and double exposures, but the town never quite let it go.
- **Indian Temple Mound** (Fort Walton Beach) · History & Markers — A thousand-year-old Mississippian platform mound sitting incongruously downtown, with one of the country's first municipally built museums (1962) beside it.
- **Coastal Dune Lakes** (Grayton Beach) · Natural Beauty — Rare lakes that swap water with the Gulf — found in only a handful of places on Earth. Paddle Western Lake, then join the locals at the Red Bar. Town motto: 'Nice Dogs, Strange People.'
- **Seaside** (Seaside) · Cult Classics & Pop Lore — The 1981 New Urbanist prototype town that played Truman Burbank's too-perfect world in The Truman Show. Eat at the Airstream row and decide if you could escape.

### The Hurricane Shore

*Rosemary Beach → Apalachicola · ~95 mi*

Panama City's old-Florida edges, Mexico Beach rebuilt from Michael's ground zero, and the long pine-and-water run to Apalachicola, the Gulf's great oyster capital.

Stops:

- **Cape San Blas** (Port St. Joe) · Natural Beauty — St. Joseph Peninsula's wild, dune-backed strand — repeatedly rated among America's best beaches with none of the crowds. Port St. Joe keeps the museum of Florida's 1838 constitution.
- **Mexico Beach** (Mexico Beach) · Small Towns — Hurricane Michael's 2018 bullseye, stubbornly rebuilt low-rise and local — the small-Florida holdout the road is named for.

### The Big Bend

*Apalachicola → St. Marks · ~95 mi*

Where Florida empties out: St. George's dunes, the world's smallest police station, worm-grunting country, and the jungle spring where the Creature swam. End at a riverside oyster bar in St. Marks.

Stops:

- **Apalachicola** (Apalachicola) · Eats & Institutions — The town that once shipped a tenth of America's oysters. The wild fishery closed in 2020 to recover and a limited harvest returned in 2026 — ask what's local before you order, then sit at the Gibson Inn's porch bar like a sea captain.
- **St. George Island Light** (St. George Island) · Natural Beauty — Collapsed into the sea in 2005, rebuilt from its own salvaged bricks by volunteers. Climb it; the strand below stays gloriously empty.
- **World's Smallest Police Station** (Carrabelle) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — A phone booth on US 98, in service since 1963 — installed partly to stop tourists from making long-distance calls on the police phone.
- **Worm Gruntin' Capital** (Sopchoppy) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Drive a stake, rub it with iron, and earthworms erupt from the ground (the vibration mimics moles — Darwin himself pondered it). Festival every April, with a Worm Queen.
- **Wakulla Springs** (Wakulla Springs) · Cult Classics & Pop Lore — One of the world's largest and deepest freshwater springs, where Tarzan swam in the '30s and the Creature from the Black Lagoon lurked in 1954. The 1937 Spanish-revival lodge serves navy bean soup; manatees idle by the dive tower.
- **St. Marks Lighthouse** (St. Marks) · Natural Beauty — An 1842 light at the end of everything, in a refuge where monarch butterflies stage each October before crossing the Gulf. Finish with oysters where the rivers meet.

## Tips and best time to go

- 30A's towns each have a personality — Grayton scruffy, Seaside scripted, Alys mineral-white; pick your fiction.
- Sea-turtle season (May–Oct): lights off beachside at night.
- The Big Bend is the emptiest coastal road in the eastern US — fuel up in Apalachicola.

## Worth a detour

- **Two Egg, Florida** — A crossroads named (the story goes) for children who bartered two eggs at the general store. The sign gets stolen a lot.
- **Britton Hill** — Florida's highest point: 345 feet, the lowest state highpoint in America. A walk-up summit with a guest register — peak bagging at its most relaxing.
- **DeFuniak Springs** — Victorian cottages ringing an almost perfectly round spring-fed lake, relic of the 1880s Florida Chautauqua.
- **Fort Pickens** — Out the Santa Rosa Island dead-end past Pensacola Beach: the 1834 brick fortress where Geronimo was imprisoned — Gulf Islands National Seashore at its emptiest.
- **Cedar Key** — An hour past Perry where US 19 runs out of land: a clam-farming island town three streets wide that is the last surviving piece of pre-boom Florida. Worth every extra mile.
