The Smokies by every road that matters, in one loop: over Newfound Gap on the park's spine to Cherokee, west through Bryson City and the Fontana country to Robbinsville, then the Cherohala Skyway, fifty miles of two-lane above 5,000 feet built for no reason but the view, down to Tellico Plains, and back over the Dragon, the 318 curves of US 129 at Deals Gap, to Cades Cove and Townsend. No town on the loop is bigger than a traffic light, and the only interstate within reach is the one you avoid.

## The drive, segment by segment

### Over the Gap

*Gatlinburg → Cherokee · ~33 mi*

US 441 climbs 3,000 feet from Sugarlands to Newfound Gap, where Roosevelt dedicated the park in 1940 with a foot in each state, then drops through the Oconaluftee valley to the Cherokee capital.

Stops:

- **Sugarlands Visitor Center** (Gatlinburg) · Natural Beauty — The park's front door: the Newfound Gap Road booklet, the Clingmans Dome road status, and the twenty-minute Cataract Falls walk behind the building.
- **Newfound Gap** (Newfound Gap) · History & Markers — The state line at 5,046 feet. The Rockefeller Memorial where FDR spoke in 1940; the Appalachian Trail crosses the parking lot. The seven-mile spur to Clingmans Dome (6,643 feet, the park's roof) leaves from here, closed in winter.
- **Clingmans Dome** (Clingmans Dome) · Natural Beauty — A half-mile paved climb to the 1959 observation tower on the highest point in Tennessee; a hundred miles on a clear day, twenty feet in a cloud, and the Fraser firs dying of the adelgid either way.
- **Mingus Mill** (Cherokee) · History & Markers — An 1886 turbine mill on Mingus Creek, still grinding on demand; the walk along the millrace is the best five minutes on the road.
- **Oconaluftee & the Mountain Farm Museum** (Cherokee) · History & Markers — A 1900s log farmstead assembled from around the Smokies; elk graze the fields at dawn and dusk since the 2001 reintroduction.
- **Museum of the Cherokee People** (Cherokee) · History & Markers — The Eastern Band's own telling, from the Paleo era through the Removal and the people who stayed in these mountains; Qualla Arts & Crafts across the street is the oldest Native American co-op in the country (1946).

### Fontana Country

*Cherokee → Robbinsville · ~45 mi*

US 19 to Bryson City's railroad depot, then NC 28 and NC 143 along the north shore of Fontana Lake through Stecoah to Robbinsville.

Stops:

- **Great Smoky Mountains Railroad** (Bryson City) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Excursion trains up the Nantahala Gorge from a 1940s depot; the Road to Nowhere, Lakeview Drive, built in 1943 to replace a drowned road and abandoned after six miles at a tunnel, starts in town.
- **Stecoah Valley Center** (Stecoah) · Small Towns — A 1916 rock schoolhouse turned arts center in the valley; the Friday music series runs summer and fall.
- **Junaluska Memorial** (Robbinsville) · History & Markers — The Cherokee chief who saved Andrew Jackson's life at Horseshoe Bend in 1814 and was repaid with the Removal; he walked home from Oklahoma and is buried here under a 1910 monument.

### The Skyway

*Robbinsville → Tellico Plains · ~55 mi*

The Cherohala Skyway, finished in 1996 at $100 million and named for the two national forests it crosses, climbs to 5,390 feet with no gas, no stores and an overlook every few miles; the Joyce Kilmer old growth is a spur at its start.

Stops:

- **Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest** (Robbinsville) · Natural Beauty — Four hundred acres of virgin poplar and hemlock never logged, some trees twenty feet around, on a flat two-mile figure-eight; dedicated in 1936 to the poet of 'Trees,' killed in France in 1918.
- **Santeetlah Overlook** (Cherohala Skyway) · Natural Beauty — The Skyway's high point at 5,390 feet, the Smokies to the north and the Unicois rolling west.
- **Huckleberry Knob** (Cherohala Skyway) · Natural Beauty — An easy mile through a grassy bald to the highest point in the Unicoi range, 5,560 feet; a 1950s plane-crash grave sits on the summit.
- **Indian Boundary Lake** (Tellico Plains) · Natural Beauty — A CCC-era lake with a flat three-mile loop and the only campground on the Skyway.
- **Bald River Falls** (Tellico Plains) · Natural Beauty — A 90-foot waterfall you see from the car window on the Tellico River road, six miles off the Skyway; the trail above it follows the river for miles.
- **Tellico Plains** (Tellico Plains) · Small Towns — The western gateway: the Skyway visitor center, Tellico Grains bakery, and the Charles Hall Museum's two free floors of local history.

### The Dragon & the Cove

*Tellico Plains → Gatlinburg · ~145 mi*

North to Vonore and the Little Tennessee, then US 129 along Chilhowee Lake into the Dragon, 318 curves in 11 miles at Deals Gap, the most famous motorcycle road in America, and home by the Foothills Parkway, Cades Cove and the Little River Road.

Stops:

- **Sequoyah Birthplace Museum** (Vonore) · History & Markers — The only tribally owned museum in Tennessee, on the site of the Overhill town where Sequoyah was born about 1776; the Fort Loudoun reconstruction (1756) is next door.
- **Chilhowee Lake** (Calderwood) · Natural Beauty — Alcoa's string of 1910s–1950s dams turned the Little Tennessee gorge into three skinny lakes; US 129 rides the shore of all of them.
- **The Dragon** (Deals Gap) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Eleven miles, 318 curves, no driveways, no intersections: US 129 from Tabcat Creek bridge to the state line. Photographers on the curves sell you your own picture; the Tree of Shame at the Deals Gap store wears the parts of bikes that didn't make it. Drive it like a tourist, not a hero; the sheriff does.
- **Fontana Dam** (Fontana) · History & Markers — The tallest dam east of the Rockies, 480 feet, built in 36 months during the war for the aluminum plants; the Appalachian Trail walks across the top. Ten miles east of Deals Gap on NC 28.
- **Foothills Parkway** (Walland) · Natural Beauty — The park's unfinished parkway, authorized in 1944: this 17-mile western section opened in 1968 and the 'Missing Link' only in 2018; Look Rock's tower is the viewpoint.
- **Cades Cove** (Cades Cove) · History & Markers — An 11-mile one-way loop through a valley of 1820s–1900s cabins, churches and a working gristmill; bears in the fields at dusk, bicycles only on summer Wednesday mornings. Allow three hours; the loop is a slow parade.
- **Townsend** (Townsend) · Small Towns — 'The Peaceful Side of the Smokies': tubing on the Little River, the Heritage Center, and no outlet malls.
- **Little River Road & Elkmont** (Elkmont) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Eighteen river-hugging miles past the Sinks and Laurel Falls to Elkmont, the 1910s logging-camp resort the park let go to ruin; nineteen cabins restored, and the synchronous fireflies draw a lottery each June.
