# The Florida Cracker Trail

*cow-hunter country across the ridge*

The Florida Cracker Trail is a ~145-mile back-roads route from Bradenton to Fort Pierce on FL 64, FL 66 and US 98, driven in 1 day, that stays off I-4 (by 80 miles) through the Florida Peninsula.

- **Drive:** Bradenton → Fort Pierce
- **Distance:** ~145 mi
- **Days:** 1
- **Highways:** FL 64, FL 66, US 98
- **Avoids:** I-4 (by 80 miles)
- **Region:** Florida Peninsula
- **Themes:** History & Markers, Oddities & Roadside Wonders, Small Towns, State Parks

Florida ran cattle a century before Texas did, and the whip-cracking 'cracker' cow hunters who drove scrub cows across this prairie named a whole people. The official Cracker Trail crosses the peninsula through the part of Florida tourists never see: palmetto range, phosphate rivers, a castle built from printing plates, one of the state's original parks, and the cattle-auction town on the big lake. Riders still cross the whole thing on horseback every February.

Markers: Cracker Trail markers run the length of FL 64 and 66; Pioneer Park anchors the story at Zolfo Springs.

## The drive, segment by segment

### Manatee to the Peace

*Bradenton → Zolfo Springs · ~49 mi*

Out of the coastal sprawl fast, into range country along FL 64, with the Solomon's Castle turnoff at Ona.

Stops:

- **Solomon's Castle** (Ona) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — Howard Solomon spent decades building a shining castle out of discarded printing plates in the middle of a swamp, plus a restaurant in a full-size boat. Folk-art royalty, closed in the summer.

### The Ridge & the Prairie

*Zolfo Springs → Okeechobee · ~62 mi*

Over the sand ridge past Highlands Hammock and Sebring's circle, then out onto the Kissimmee prairie to the lake.

Stops:

- **Cracker Trail Museum** (Zolfo Springs) · History & Markers — Pioneer Park's homage to the cow hunters: whips, marsh ponies, cur dogs and the open-range economy that ran Florida for 300 years.
- **Highlands Hammock State Park** (Sebring) · State Parks — One of Florida's four original state parks, with a CCC museum and a catwalk through old-growth hammock and cypress swamp. Thousand-year-old oaks, resident gators.
- **Sebring's Circle & Raceway** (Sebring) · Cult Classics & Pop Lore — A 1912 town planned around a circle, and on the old bomber base outside it, America's oldest road-racing circuit: the 12 Hours of Sebring has run since 1952.

### To the Coast

*Okeechobee → Fort Pierce · ~34 mi*

The old drover's run east to the Atlantic, where the cattle once shipped and the Treasure Coast route picks up.

Stops:

- **Okeechobee Cattle Country** (Okeechobee) · Small Towns — Still one of the biggest cattle counties east of the Mississippi; the livestock market and the Speckled Perch Festival keep the cow-town core honest.
- **Kissimmee Prairie horizon** (Okeechobee) · Natural Beauty — The dry prairie north of the lake is Florida's best dark-sky country and the last stronghold of the grasshopper sparrow. Flat, huge, and genuinely wild.

## Tips and best time to go

- The Cracker Trail Ride crosses the state over a week each February; expect horses on the shoulder and stop for them.
- Solomon's Castle keeps eccentric hours and typically closes for the summer; call before you detour.

## Worth a detour

- **Arcadia** — Fifteen miles south of Zolfo on US 17: an antique-district cow town whose all-Florida championship rodeo has run since 1928.
- **Lake Placid murals** — Nearly 50 giant murals and the self-declared Caladium Capital of the World. Small-town boosterism as a public art form.
