- **Distance:** ~180 mi
- **Days:** 2
- **Highways:** US 84, LA 6, LA 119
- **Avoids:** I-49
- **Region:** Gulf Coast
- **Themes:** History & Markers, Music & Juke Joints, Small Towns, Eats & Institutions

Spain's royal road to Texas crossed Louisiana here, and the towns it left behind are the state's oldest. This run crosses the Delta from Natchez through Ferriday, where one small town produced Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart as first cousins, into Huey Long's hometown, then Natchitoches, the oldest permanent settlement in the whole Louisiana Purchase, and out the Camino past frontier forts to the Sabine. Chains to the Texas act at Toledo Bend.

Markers: El Camino Real de los Tejas NHT markers pace LA 6; Cane River Creole NHP interprets the plantations.

## The drive, segment by segment

### Across the Delta

*Natchez → Winnfield · ~75 mi*

Over the river to Ferriday's improbable music dynasty, then piney-hills US 84 into Long country.

Stops:

- **Delta Music Museum** (Ferriday) · Music & Juke Joints — Jerry Lee, Gilley and Swaggart, cousins from one Louisiana town of 3,500. The museum sorts the piano genes from the pulpit genes.
- **Louisiana Political Museum** (Winnfield) · History & Markers — Winnfield produced three governors including Huey and Earl Long; the old depot museum embraces the state's cheerful political notoriety.

### Cane River Country

*Winnfield → Natchitoches · ~30 mi*

Into the 1714 town: brick-paved Front Street, meat pies, and the Cane River plantation loop hanging south.

Stops:

- **Front Street, Natchitoches** (Natchitoches) · Small Towns — The oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase (1714), brick streets on the Cane, meat pies at Lasyone's. Steel Magnolias filmed the whole town.
- **Melrose Plantation** (Melrose) · History & Markers — Founded by formerly enslaved Marie Thérèse Coincoin's family; the African House holds Clementine Hunter's murals, folk art's answer to the Sistine ceiling.

### The Camino to the Sabine

*Natchitoches → Toledo Bend · ~75 mi*

LA 6 past Fort Jesup and the lost Spanish capital of Texas to the Pendleton crossing.

Stops:

- **Fort Jesup** (Many) · History & Markers — Zachary Taylor's 1822 frontier post on the old neutral-strip border; the Army of Observation staged here before marching into the Mexican War.
- **Los Adaes** (Robeline) · History & Markers — The Spanish capital of Texas from 1729 to 1770, which sits, wonderfully, in Louisiana. The site keeps the whole border's absurd history honest.

## Tips and best time to go

- Natchitoches's Christmas Festival of Lights has run since 1926; December weekends are packed.
- Do the Cane River loop clockwise in late light; the pecan orchards earn it.

## Worth a detour

- **Oakland Plantation** — A Cane River Creole National Historical Park unit with an unbroken run of outbuildings; the whole working landscape survives.
- **Grand Ecore overlook** — An 80-foot bluff over the Red River, fought over in 1864 and worth the short climb any year.
