# Blue Ridge Parkway & the Smokies

*America's longest slow road, southern half*

Blue Ridge Parkway & the Smokies is a ~400-mile back-roads route from Roanoke to Cherokee (+ Smokies spurs) on Blue Ridge Pkwy, US 441 and US 129, driven in 3–5 days, that stays off I-81 / I-40 / I-26 through the Upper South.

- **Drive:** Roanoke → Cherokee (+ Smokies spurs)
- **Distance:** ~400 mi
- **Days:** 3–5
- **Highways:** Blue Ridge Pkwy, US 441, US 129
- **Avoids:** I-81 / I-40 / I-26
- **Region:** Upper South
- **Themes:** Natural Beauty, Oddities & Roadside Wonders, Cult Classics & Pop Lore, Small Towns

The Natchez Trace's mountain cousin: 45 mph, no trucks, no billboards, mileposts counting Roanoke (120) to Cherokee (469). Highest peaks in the East, an abandoned Wizard of Oz theme park, gem-mine kitsch, Asheville's gilded mansion — then over the Smokies on Newfound Gap Road, with a spur to the most famous 11 miles of curves in America. The parkway is the destination; the towns are the intermissions.

Markers: Parkway mileposts MP 120→469 key every site; collect the wooden visitor-center stamps if you like a quest.

## The drive, segment by segment

### The Plateau

*Roanoke (MP 120) → Cumberland Knob (MP 217) · ~95 mi*

Rolling farm parkway past Mabry Mill (shared with the Crooked Road — braided on the map) and Fancy Gap, to the spot where Parkway construction began in 1935.

### The High Country

*Cumberland Knob → Linville (MP ~317) · ~100 mi*

Doughton's wild meadows, fresco churches, Blowing Rock's legend-and-kitsch, the Land of Oz ruins, and the Linn Cove Viaduct curling around Grandfather Mountain.

Stops:

- **Cumberland Knob (MP 217.5)** (Cumberland Knob) · History & Markers — Where the first Parkway crews broke ground on September 11, 1935 — a New Deal project that took 52 years to finish (see Linn Cove, below).
- **Doughton Park (MP 241)** (Laurel Springs) · Natural Beauty — Deer in the meadows, Brinegar Cabin's loom demonstrations, and the wildest camping on the northern NC stretch.
- **Churches of the Frescoes** (Glendale Springs) · History & Markers — Ben Long's luminous frescoes in two tiny 1900s mission churches — Appalachian Giotto, doors open dawn to dusk, donation box on trust.
- **Blowing Rock** (Blowing Rock) · Small Towns — The cliff whose updraft returns thrown objects (and, in the Cherokee legend, a leaping lover); Tweetsie Railroad's 1957 steam-train park; Mystery Hill's gravity house; the 1883 Mast General Store over in Valle Crucis.
- **Land of Oz (spur)** (Beech Mountain) · Cult Classics & Pop Lore — A 1970 Wizard of Oz theme park, abandoned 1980, yellow brick road intact at 5,500 feet — opens a few 'Autumn at Oz' weekends a year, eerie and wonderful the rest. The great lost American theme park.
- **Linn Cove Viaduct (MP 304.4)** (Grandfather Mountain) · Natural Beauty — The snaking precast bridge that finally completed the Parkway in 1987 — built top-down to spare the mountain. Grandfather's Mile High Swinging Bridge sways next door.

### The Black Mountains & Asheville

*Linville → Asheville (MP 382) · ~65 mi*

Gem-mine country, the road up Mount Mitchell — highest point east of the Mississippi — Craggy's rhododendron tunnels, and Asheville's Biltmore excess.

Stops:

- **Little Switzerland & Emerald Village** (Little Switzerland) · Oddities & Roadside Wonders — A 1910s resort hamlet and the gem-mine complex in old mica workings — flume mining for emeralds, blacklight mine tours, vintage roadside Americana at elevation.
- **Mount Mitchell (MP 355 spur)** (Burnsville) · Natural Beauty — 6,684 feet — the roof of the East. The summit honors Elisha Mitchell, who fell to his death defending his measurement (he was right). Spruce-fir, fog, Canada in Carolina.
- **Asheville & Biltmore** (Asheville) · Small Towns — America's largest home (250 rooms of Vanderbilt ambition), the Folk Art Center's craft lineage (MP 382), and the Moogseum — Bob Moog synthesized the future here. Deco downtown, dueling buskers.

### Pisgah to the Smokies

*Asheville → Cherokee (MP 469) + spurs · ~140 mi*

The Parkway's highest miles past Graveyard Fields and Richland Balsam to Cherokee — then over Newfound Gap into Gatlinburg's glorious kitsch, or west to the Dragon's 318 curves.

Stops:

- **Graveyard Fields & Devil's Courthouse** (Pisgah Forest) · Natural Beauty — Moon-meadow valleys (MP 418) and the bare-rock devil's bench (MP 422) — the Parkway's most dramatic mile cluster, blueberries in August.
- **Richland Balsam (MP 431.4)** (Balsam) · Natural Beauty — The Parkway's highest point: 6,053 feet. Pull-off, sign, photo, the ritual is mandatory.
- **Cherokee** (Cherokee) · History & Markers — MP 469, the end. The Museum of the Cherokee People, the Qualla co-op (the oldest Native American arts cooperative, 1946), and 'Unto These Hills' under the stars since 1950 — the Eastern Band's own telling.
- **Newfound Gap & Kuwohi (spur)** (Great Smoky Mtns) · Natural Beauty — US 441 crosses the Smokies' spine at 5,046 ft (FDR dedicated the park here, straddling the state line). The spur road climbs to Kuwohi — long mapped as Clingmans Dome, renamed in 2024 — 6,643 ft, observation spiral above the clouds.
- **Gatlinburg (spur)** (Gatlinburg) · Cult Classics & Pop Lore — The kitsch capital of the Appalachians: Ripley's everything, the Space Needle, airbrush tees, and — genuinely great — the Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum's 20,000 sets. Dolly's Dollywood is twenty minutes on.
- **Tail of the Dragon (spur)** (Deals Gap) · Cult Classics & Pop Lore — 318 curves in 11 miles of US 129 — the most famous driving road in America. The Tree of Shame at the resort collects parts from bikes that didn't make it. Pair with the empty, serene Cherohala Skyway if curves beat crowds.

## Tips and best time to go

- Fog closes Parkway sections spring and fall — check NPS closures and have the US 221 escape valve in mind.
- No gas on the Parkway itself; fuel at the gap towns.
- October weekends are gorgeous and gridlocked; aim midweek.
- US 441 continues south from Cherokee down all of Georgia — this road and 'Sherman to the Swamp' are one continuous line.

## Worth a detour

- **Roan Mountain** — June: the world's largest natural rhododendron garden blooms across the balds.
- **Cataloochee Valley** — Elk herds at dawn and dusk in a hidden Smokies cove of pioneer churches — washboard road, worth every rattle.
- **Cherohala Skyway** — 43 high-elevation miles (NC 143/TN 165) with a fraction of the Dragon's traffic — the connoisseur's mountain road.
